1m F/8 Ritchey Chrétien with dual Nasmyth Foci, Cape Town (South Africa)

Another large telescope for the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). An 1m F/8 Alt-Az mounted Ritchey Chrétien for robotic use. It has dual Nasmyth Foci. The main telescopes used for research are located at the SAAO observing station (32°22.795’S 20°48,657’E) near Sutherland in the Northern Cape, a 4-hour drive from Cape Town.

Sloan u: UV photometric filter in ugriz´ serie
Sloan g: Green photometric filter in ugriz´ series
Sloan r: Red photometric filter in ugriz´ series
Sloan i: NIR photometric filter in ugriz´ series
Sloan z: NIR photometric filter (longer wavelengths) in ugriz´ series

In contrast to the Bessell system, the Sloan system has wider passbands and slightly higher transmission, which makes it more suitable for faint objects such as galaxies. The ugriz´ filters differ slightly in their characteristics from the corresponding griz filters of the Gunn system, as they are specially designed for the 2.5 m Sloan telescope.
