Astrodom/APM Metal-Domes
These domes, designed and built by the renowned company Astrodome and APM Telescopes, are made of high quality metal and built to last a lifetime. They defy the vagaries of nature with ease and can withstand the most extreme conditions, be it under the scorching sun of the desert landscapes, the icy storms of the polar regions or the ever-changing weather conditions in the mountains.
The stability of these structures is impressive. Carefully constructed to withstand the forces of nature, they provide a safe and secure space for the valuable astronomical equipment inside. Equipped with a motorised drive, they can be precisely controlled to direct the view to any desired point in the sky, allowing for seamless observation of the universe.
From the vastness of China to the landscapes of Chile and the majestic mountains of Europe, domes rise as symbols of man's eagerness to explore the universe, varying in diameter from a modest 3 metres to an imposing 15 metres, depending on the requirements of astronomical research and the resources available on site.
The true art lies in the flexibility and adaptability of the domes. Each dome can be customised to meet specific research requirements. From state-of-the-art telescopes to specialised instruments for image and data acquisition, they can be equipped with everything needed to unlock the secrets of the universe.
The commitment of companies like Astrodome and APM Telescopes to excellence and innovation is reflected in every single dome they create. By accommodating special requests and collaborating with leading astronomers worldwide, they push the boundaries of our knowledge of the universe and accompany humanity on its path to new insights and discoveries.
Astrodom/APM GFK- Clemshell Domes
In addition to the metal domes, we also offer clemshell domes made of GRP under the APM label.
The advantages of clamshell GRP domes in modern research
In the world of science and research, innovative solutions are needed to meet the constantly growing demands. One such solution is provided by clamshell domes made of GRP (glass fibre reinforced plastic), which are becoming increasingly popular and are used in various areas of research. These domes offer a number of advantages that make them an attractive option for scientists and researchers.
Robust construction and durability
Clamshell GRP domes are known for their robust construction and durability. Manufactured from high-quality glass fibre reinforced plastics, they are extremely resistant to environmental influences such as extreme temperatures, moisture and chemical substances. This robustness not only ensures a long service life, but also reliable protection for the sensitive instruments and equipment housed in the dome.
Lightweight and easy to install
Compared to traditional domes made from other materials, clamshell GRP domes are significantly lighter. This makes them easy to transport and install, saving time and resources. Their lightweight construction also means that they can be installed on a variety of surfaces without the need for extensive foundation work.
Flexibility and adaptability
One of the outstanding features of clamshell GRP domes is their flexibility and adaptability. They can be easily customised to meet the specific requirements of different research projects. Whether it is the integration of telescopes, camera systems or other instruments, clamshell domes provide the flexibility required to support a variety of research applications.
Clamshell GRP domes are generally more cost-effective than domes made of other materials such as aluminium or steel. Their light weight reduces transport and installation costs, while their durable construction enables long-term savings on maintenance and repair. This makes them an attractive option for research facilities and educational establishments with limited budgets.
Versatility in application
Clamshell GRP domes are used in a variety of applications, including astronomy, meteorology, environmental science and more. Their versatility and adaptability make them an ideal choice for researchers looking for a reliable and cost-effective solution to conduct their experiments and observations.
Overall, clamshell GRP domes offer an attractive combination of robustness, flexibility, cost-effectiveness and versatility that makes them a popular choice for modern research. With their ability to meet the most demanding requirements, they play a crucial role in the exploration and discovery of new knowledge in various scientific disciplines.

In addition to all our domes, we also offer the matching control unit. This also enables remote-controlled operation
Astrometric's DomeProU ControllersThe DomeProU is born from the experience of installing our DomePro (first in 2006) and DomePro2 products on hundreds of domes by Ash Manufacturing and others. DomeProU provides fully automated control of all types of telescope enclosures including: classic domes, clamshell domes and roll-off roof enclosures. DomeProU-c is one module that controls the two sides of the clamshell. Independent closure of either side to any angle is provided.
