From the idea to realisation

Robotic & Remote Telescope Array in qatar

Over the last decade remote observatories became very common even among amateur astronomers. Besides amateuer astronomy, they had already gained importance in semi-professional and professional astronomy before. Scientists nowadays often use so called robotic telescopes to scan the sky systematically again and again, e.g. to seek asteroids that could evolve into a potential risk. Whereas remote telescopes usually do not work without an operator, robotic telescopes are programmed to do their work over a long period of time fully automatically without any human. robtel4robtel1

APM Telescopes offers the know-how and the suitable hardware to realize observatories of that kind. Our heavy mounting APM GE-300 has integrated remote capabilities and can be used for such purposes. It can be fitted with a large variety of APM Professional optic/tube assemblies, e.g. our high quality astrographs. These optics can either be installed as a one-tube solution, usually desired by ambitious amateur astronomers, that want to escape mostly unstable weather conditions, or as an multiple-tube solution in an array of telescopes, which is often used for robotic telesocpes.   robtel7robtel8

But robotic and remote telescopes consist of more than just the optical assembly and the mounting. Many other parts are necessary to make a telescope a perfectly functional remote device. These include a device for pointing the telescope to the correct position, a detector (a CCD camera) that images the sky, a motorized and controllable focuser and of course a fully operational remote observatory dome that has sensors for the detection of weather conditions.  robtel9robtel10

APM Professional Telescopes - Building a customised 12-inch bino telescope

Assembling a custom-made 12-inch bino telescope opens up the possibility of not only exploring the sky, but also creating a personalised instrument tailored to your exact needs. This guide explains the steps to realise an exclusive bino telescope.

define the design and specifications:
Before you begin, sketch out your ideas. Decide on the telescope tube, the type of mount, the binocular system and other details. Consider whether you want to optimise the telescope for special observations, such as astrophotography or planetary observations.

tJ0pXASg

select telescope tube and optics:
Choose a high-quality 12-inch telescope tube with the desired focal length. Consider the quality of the optics and lens materials for optimal imaging.

high quality mount:
Invest in a robust and precise mount that is tailored to the specific requirements of your telescope. Electronic mounts with GoTo function can automate sky alignment.

customised bino system:
Decide on a binoviewer system that meets your requirements. Consider the quality of the prism, the possibility of dioptre adjustment and compatibility with different eyepieces.

 GFUEs0w

precision mechanics and focussing:
Choose a high-quality focuser and other precision mechanics components that allow for precise control and focusing.

tripod, column and stability:
A custom tripod should not only be stable, but also adjustable to allow for different viewing heights.

additional customisations and extras:
If you have special requirements, such as integrating astrophotography accessories or filter mounts, plan these customisations in advance.

we offer professional help:
Consider getting professional help, especially if you don't have experience putting telescopes together. Specialised companies can help you implement your ideas.

tests and adjustments:
After assembly, we carry out comprehensive tests. Adjust the mechanisms to ensure optimum performance.

Conclusion:
Building a customised 12-inch bino telescope is not only a technical challenge, but also a creative journey. By carefully selecting the components and considering your individual preferences, you can create a telescope that is not only functional, but also an extension of your astronomical research.

APM Prime Focus Telescopes

Throughout history, astronomers have developed various telescopes to get to the bottom of the secrets of the universe. One of these is the prime focus telescope, which impresses with its special design and wide range of possible applications.

Primary application

Astrophotography:

Prime focus telescopes are particularly suitable for astrophotography. The direct connection between telescope and camera enables photographers to capture breathtaking images of stars, planets, galaxies and other celestial bodies.

Astronomical research:

Researchers often use prime focus telescopes for various astronomical studies. The clear and detailed images allow scientists to examine objects in the universe more closely and gain new insights.

primefocus telescopes

APM Telescopes offers large telescopes for institutions like universities, research centers and public observatories. Each telescope is custom made and will fulfill any desired requirement.

During the last two decades we have continually developed optics, mechanics and electronics to build professional telescope systems superior to others. We are specialized in large Cassegrain telescopes with primefocus in diameters up to 2.5m. We can also modifiy the optical and mechanical design for your needs, like wide-field telescopes with short focal length or equatorial fork mountings instead of usual alt-az mountings.

Transport and Installation

Transporting a telescope by lorry: a real challenge

Transporting a telescope, especially when it comes to high-quality and sensitive astronomical instruments, requires careful planning and execution. Transport by lorry is one of the most common methods. This APM story highlights the challenges that can arise when transporting a telescope and provides guidance on best practices to ensure that the telescope reaches its destination intact.

the challenges of transporting a telescope

Sensitive optics
Telescopes are equipped with high-precision optical components that can be easily damaged. Shocks and vibrations during transport must therefore be minimised in order to preserve the quality of the optics.

Stability and alignment
The stability and alignment of a telescope are critical to its performance. During transport, there is a risk of damage to the mechanical and electrical systems, which can affect the calibration and use of the telescope.

Exposure to the elements
Telescopes are often sensitive to weather conditions such as humidity and temperature fluctuations. Improper transport can cause these factors to affect the instruments.

proven methods for transporting telescopes by lorry

Professional packaging
Careful packing is essential. The telescope should be securely fixed in custom-made crates with shock-absorbing material to minimise movement during transport.

Stable fastening in the lorry
The telescope should be securely and stably fastened in the lorry. This can be achieved by using special brackets and padding material to absorb shocks.

Slow and careful driving
The driver of the lorry should be particularly careful and attentive. A slow and steady driving style reduces the likelihood of sudden jolts and protects the telescope from damage.

On-site inspection by our trained staff
Upon arrival, the telescope should be checked on site to ensure that it has not suffered any damage during transport. Any problems should be rectified immediately.

Conclusion
Transporting a telescope by lorry requires thoughtful planning and the application of best practice. Investing in professional packaging, stable mounting in the vehicle, climate control and careful driving are crucial to ensure that the telescope arrives at its destination undamaged. By following these guidelines, astronomers and researchers can ensure that their telescopes function optimally, even after long-distance transport.
