How SBIG Adaptive Optics works

At the heart of the SBIG-AO units is a movable corrector, usually a plane-parallel glass plate that is tilted ever so slightly by precision motors or piezo actuators. These minute movements – often in the region of a few arcseconds – compensate for:

  • atmospheric seeing
  • mechanical inaccuracies in the mount
  • periodic errors
  • Wind or vibrations

Unlike traditional autoguiders, which only track the mount, the AO operates directly in the optical path and can make corrections at a significantly higher frequency, often up to 10–30 Hz. This results in sharper stars, more stable long-exposure images and, overall, higher image quality.
