
Chroma narrowband filters: H-Alpha, OIII and SII for maximum contrast
Narrowband filters from Chroma Technology are among the most precise tools in modern astrophotography. They isolate extremely narrow wavelength ranges – typically 3 nm or 5 nm – thereby enabling impressive levels of detail to be captured even under challenging conditions such as light pollution or bright moonlight.
H-Alpha (Hα) – The backbone of nebula photography
The H-Alpha filter cleanly separates the distinctive hydrogen line at 656.3 nm from the neighbouring SII double peak. Models such as the 3 nm Hα filter are specifically optimised for fast optics (e.g. f/3) to minimise spectral shifts and maintain a stable transmission curve. The result: the finest structures in emission nebulae and a drastic reduction in distracting background light.
Oxygen III (OIII) – Revealing energetic regions
OIII filters isolate the emission from doubly ionised oxygen. This line reveals the dynamic, high-energy regions of many nebulae and complements H-Alpha perfectly. Together, they produce the characteristic turquoise structures that dominate many narrow-band images.
Sulphur II (SII) – Depth in the narrow-band trio
The SII filter focuses on the emission at 671.6 nm and 673.1 nm. It provides the third component of the classic SHO colour scheme (Hubble palette). Chroma offers SII filters both individually and in matched sets, which guarantee consistent performance across all three lines.
